Coil Nail Anatomy Explained — Head, Shank, Point & Gauge

Every coil nail is a system of four interdependent components. The head determines bearing surface and code compliance. The shank dictates holding strength. The point controls penetration behavior and splitting risk. And the gauge and length define structural capacity. Understanding how these elements work together is the key to selecting the right fastener for your application.

Full Round Head Coil Nail

Full Round Head

The largest-diameter head available, offering peak clamping force against the wood surface. Meets every major structural building code (IBC, IRC) without exception.

Structural framing, code-regulated connections

Clipped Head D Head Coil Nail

Clipped Head (D-Head)

A flat section is trimmed from one side of the head, reducing its footprint. This geometry lets manufacturers pack more nails per coil, reducing reload downtime.

Pallet manufacturing, non-load-bearing
Checkered Head Coil Nail

Checkered Head MOST POPULAR

The top surface is embossed with a crosshatch pattern to prevent the nailer's driver blade from slipping off-center during rapid-fire operation.

Automated pallet lines, industrial speeds
Head Style Contact Area Coil Capacity Building Code Status Primary Use
Full Round Largest Standard (200–300) Universally accepted Structural framing
Clipped / D-Head Smaller Increased (250–350) Restricted in some regions Pallets, non-structural
Checkered Standard Standard Application-specific High-speed industrial
Smooth Shank Coil Nail

Smooth Shank

A plain, unmodified wire surface with no ridges or threads. Smooth shanks require the least driving force and cost the least to produce.

Sheathing attachment, temporary bracing
Ring Shank Coil Nail

Ring Shank HIGH PERFORMANCE

Concentric ridges interlock with wood fibers and create a mechanical bond that resists pull-out forces far better than a smooth surface.

EPAL pallets, subflooring, decking
Screw Shank Coil Nail

Screw Shank STRONGEST HOLD

A continuous helical groove spirals around the shank. During driving, the nail rotates slightly and effectively threads itself into the surrounding wood.

Dense hardwood, high-load joints
Performance benchmark: Smooth shank = baseline. Ring shank ≈ 40% stronger withdrawal. Screw shank ≈ 50–55% stronger than smooth.
Diamond Point Coil Nail

Diamond Point

The standard four-beveled tip forming a symmetrical point. The most widely used point type for coil nails, offering a balanced combination of driving speed and holding performance in softwood and medium-density lumber.

Blunt Diamond Point Coil Nail

Blunt Diamond Point

A diamond point deliberately dulled or flattened at the tip. Crushes wood fibers on entry rather than wedging them apart, significantly reducing the risk of splitting. Ideal for hardwoods, thin stock, and nailing near board edges.

Sharp Diamond Point Coil Nail

Sharp Diamond Point

An extra-refined diamond point ground to a finer, more aggressive tip than standard. Penetrates faster with less driving force — the go-to choice for softwoods and high-speed production lines where rapid cycle time matters.

Needle Diamond Point Coil Nail

Needle Diamond Point

A diamond point drawn out to an elongated, needle-like tip. Minimizes driving resistance for the fastest possible penetration, well suited to softwoods and rapid, repetitive fastening.

Chisel Point Coil Nail

Chisel Point

A single flat, angled cutting edge, like a flat-head screwdriver tip. Slices along the wood grain on entry to reduce splitting in dense lumber. A common choice for pallet and industrial nailing.

Blunt Chisel Point Coil Nail

Blunt Chisel Point

A chisel point with a deliberately dulled edge. Combines the grain-slicing entry of a chisel tip with reduced splitting, making it dependable for hardwoods and heavy-duty pallet assembly.

Available Lengths

Kintech coil nails span the full range from 1″ (25mm) through 4″ (100mm). The most frequently specified lengths include:

Length (in) Length (mm) Typical Application
1-1/4″ 32mm Roofing underlayment, thin sheathing
1-3/4″ 45mm Light pallet assembly, subflooring
2″ 50mm Standard pallet and crate fastening
2-1/4″ 57mm General-purpose framing, sheathing
2-3/8″ 60mm Wall framing, floor sheathing
3″ 76mm Heavy structural framing
3-1/4″ 83mm Structural connections, double-member framing
3-1/2″ 89mm Maximum-duty structural applications

Wire Diameter (Gauge)

Shank diameter determines shear strength and lateral load capacity. Standard diameters range from 0.083″ (2.1mm) to 0.148″ (3.76mm):

Diameter (in) Typical Application
0.083″ / 0.090″ Roofing, light-duty attachment
0.099″ Pallet nailing (industry-standard pallet gauge)
0.113″ General framing
0.120″ Reinforced framing
0.131″ / 0.148″ Heavy structural, maximum shear capacity

Surface Treatments & Coatings

Choose the right protection level for your environment:

  • Bright (Bare Steel) — No coating. Suitable for dry, interior environments.
  • Electro-Galvanized (EG) — Thin zinc layer via electroplating. Moderate rust protection.
  • Hot-Dipped Galvanized (HDG) — Thick zinc coating. Highest corrosion resistance for outdoor/marine use.
  • Phosphate Coated — Chemical conversion coating for improved paint/coating adhesion.
  • Vinyl / Cement Coated — Resin layer for driving lubrication and long-term holding friction.

Collation Standard

All Kintech coil nails are collated at 15° using wire welding — the universal standard for pneumatic coil nailer magazines. Two thin steel wires are resistance-welded across the shanks, binding the nails side-by-side into a flexible strip that rolls into a tight coil fitting the nailer's circular drum.

Common Applications for Wire Coil Nails

Wire coil nails are collated fasteners bound together at a 15° angle using thin steel wire, specifically engineered to load into the rotary magazine of pneumatic coil nailers. A single coil holds between 200 and 350 nails depending on size, which means fewer reloads and significantly faster cycle times on production floors and job sites.

Coil Nail FAQs — Answered by Our Engineering Team

A coil nail is a fastener that has been collated — joined side-by-side with other identical nails using thin wire — into a curved strip that rolls into a coil. That coil loads into the circular magazine of a pneumatic coil nailer, allowing the operator to drive hundreds of nails before reloading.
Smooth shanks offer baseline holding power and are the most economical. Ring shanks feature concentric ridges that interlock with wood grain, boosting pull-out resistance by approximately 40%. Screw shanks have helical threads that provide the strongest grip — around 50–55% above smooth shank levels — making them ideal for hardwoods and high-load connections.
The 15° angle is the industry-standard collation geometry for wire-welded coil nails. This angle allows the nails to form a tightly wound coil that fits the rotary magazine design used by virtually every major coil nailer manufacturer. It is not interchangeable with other collation angles (such as 20° or 21° used in plastic-strip nails).
Choose full round heads whenever local building codes govern the connection — structural framing, shear walls, hurricane straps. Clipped heads are acceptable where codes permit (many pallet and crate applications) and offer the benefit of fitting more nails per coil, reducing reload frequency.
Hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) is the gold standard for weather-exposed connections — fences, decks, exterior sheathing, marine-adjacent structures. Electro-galvanized (EG) provides lighter protection suitable for sheltered exterior use. Bright (uncoated) nails should only be used indoors.
Most pallet builders use 2″ × 0.099″ or 2-1/4″ × 0.099″ nails with ring or screw shanks. If your operation produces EPAL-certified pallets, the required metric sizes are 2.8×40mm, 3.4×70mm, and 3.4×90mm — all of which we stock.
Coil count depends on nail length. Shorter nails (1-1/4″ through 2″) generally come 300 per coil. Mid-range lengths (2-1/4″ through 2-3/4″) average 250. Longer nails (3″ through 4″) are packed 175 to 200 per coil.
Kintech coil nails conform to the 15° wire-welded standard and are verified compatible with all leading nailer brands — Bostitch, Hitachi/Metabo HPT, MAX, Senco, Paslode, Makita, Duo-Fast, Everwin, and others. If you're uncertain, send us your nailer's make and model and we'll confirm.
Yes. We produce EPAL-certified ring shank coil nails in the three most commonly mandated sizes: 2.8×40mm, 3.4×70mm, and 3.4×90mm. Certificates of compliance are available upon request.
